Inside TARA: How the Vault and the Smart Account Work
How TARA is built: an MPC Vault with no seed phrase, a Smart Account on regulated rails, and the clear line between them. One app, two accounts.
Every money app says "trust us."
We'd rather show you how TARA is built.
TARA is one app with two accounts, and they run on deliberately different foundations. The Vault is a self-custody wallet only you control. The Smart Account is a spending account on regulated financial rails.
Different jobs. Different architecture. And a clear line between them, by design.
The Vault: Keys without a keyholder
A crypto wallet has one job: keep a private key safe and use it to sign transactions.
Most wallets generate that key on your device and hand you the backup. The seed phrase. Twelve or twenty-four words that are the master key to everything you own. Whoever finds them, owns your crypto. Lose them, and nobody can help you.
The Vault works differently.

It uses MPC, short for multi-party computation.
Your private key is never created as a single object. Not on your phone, not on a server, not anywhere. Separate key shares are generated in separate places, and they cooperate to sign transactions without ever being assembled into one key.
There is no complete key to steal. No single point of failure. Nothing to write down.
Access is your passkey and biometrics.
Lose your phone? Recover your Vault on a new device and keep everything.
The backup is you.
Not a file on Google’s or Apple’s cloud. Not a third party recovery service you have to remember to pay for. You.
And that architecture has a consequence worth reading twice:
TARA cannot access, move, or freeze what's in your Vault.
Every on-chain action starts with you. There's no company between you and your assets, so there's nothing to verify.
Self-custody, minus the friction
Owning your keys used to come with homework. Gas tokens. Manual bridges. Wrong-network anxiety.
The Vault removes the friction and keeps the ownership.

It works across the most popular blockchain networks, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana among them, with more on the way. Fees can be paid in stablecoins, so you're never stuck hunting a network's gas token. Moving assets between chains happens inside the app.
And for Bitcoin holders, the Vault generates fresh addresses as you go, so you're not broadcasting your balance and history to everyone you transact with.
The Smart Account: Feels like a bank, but is not a bank.
The Smart Account is the opposite of the Vault. Deliberately.
It's custodial: regulated companies manage it, and opening one requires identity verification, the standard KYC check behind any fintech account. That's the entry ticket to the traditional financial system, and it buys you what no self-custody wallet can.

Your assets sit in institutional custody. Your dollars live in USD+, built with M0, and accrue rewards in eligible jurisdictions, every second, automatically. You can send and receive fiat, like a regular bank account.
And you can spend it.
The Tara Visa Platinum Card works with Apple Pay and Google Pay anywhere Visa is accepted.
Your swaps come with a guaranteed execution price. No slippage, no surprises. Even when initiated through your Vault. All assets in Tara get the same professional OTC trading desk. No market orders. Never be surprised when placing a trade again.

The boundary is the whole point
Plenty of apps blur the line between "your money" and "money a company holds for you."
That blur is where people get hurt. When an exchange collapses, the painful discovery is always the same: customers thought they held their crypto, but in reality, the exchange did.
We built TARA so that confusion cannot happen.
The two accounts are visibly separate.
The app always tells you which one you're in. And nothing moves between them unless you move it: a transfer from Vault to Smart Account, or back, takes a few taps, and it's always you who starts it.
Long-term conviction goes in the Vault. Everyday money goes in the Smart Account. You decide the split, and you can change your mind whenever you like.
What we can't do
We cannot move your Vault assets.
We cannot freeze them.
We cannot hand them to anyone who isn't you.
TARA is not a bank, and the regulated companies behind the Smart Account operate under their own terms of service.
Everything a money app could do to you against your will, we designed out of the system.
For years, you had two options: hold your own keys and carry the complexity, or hand everything over and hope. The technology forced that choice. It doesn't anymore.
The two halves of your financial life can finally live in one place, without pretending to be each other. And this architecture is the foundation for everything we build next.
TARA is opening in friends and family mode, with public access to follow. Join the waitlist at tara.com.
